<HTML>Was it Prien, or was it Kretschmer who told Doenitz that? One of the 2 anyway. I can\'t remember which book of mine I got this out of, but most books on the Pacific campaign go into the problem, esp. those written by the skippers, since it was a problem very \"close to the heart\". The interesting thing about the German and US experience is that both torpedo depts. sent the fish to war based on a lot of technical paperwork, and very few test-firings with live warheads...Too expensive! (\"We have lots of fancy torpedos at 25,000 Marks apiece, but not 10 Pfennig\'s worth of old wire!!!\" Name the Movie...) I seem to recall that during testing of the American fish, they based success on whether or not the firing pin marked where the primer was supposed to be. In battle, they found that the pin would \"tap\" the primer enough to mark it, but not hard enough to explode it.....</HTML>
