<HTML>Walter,
The situation you describe - sailors trapped in a sinking ship is not limited to ships that capsize. The battleship West Virginia took seven torpedoes at Pearl Harbor but was counterflooded and sank on a relatively even keel. When she was raised, the repair crews made a rather grisly discovery: \"During the ensuing repairs, workers located 70 bodies of West Virginia sailors who had been trapped below when the ship
sank. In one compartment, a calendar was found, the last scratch-off date being 23 December.\" (The quote is from the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships.)
At the Battle of Midway, battle damage trapped a number of Japanese sailors below in one of the carriers (Kaga?). When torpedoes were used to scuttle the floating wreck, a passageway was open, allowing the crewmen to escape. I believe most were eventually rescued by a USN ship.
Best wishes,
Michael Lowrey</HTML>
