Night fighters

<HTML>This is not a U-boat topic, but here goes anyway. The antler antennas of the Lichtenstein UHF radar carried by the German night fighters caused a lot of drag and slowed them down considerably (Numbers are hard to find, but the speed reduction was somewhere around 50 km/hr. at high altitude). The aircraft were difficult to take off due to the high weight of radar, crew and fuel and the antenna drag and there were a lot of accidents. The range of the best Lichtenstein sets, the SN-2, was only 5,000 meters. With microwave radar there would have been no outside antennas and the range was at least 10,000 meters. Therefore more night fighters would have been available, the planes would have been faster and had more range, the crews would have lived longer and they would have had a much easier time finding their targets. Hence a much higher operational efficiency and higher British losses. The 20% is an estimate.
