Hi Alex,

Space is always at a premium on a submarine and everything is a tradeoff as a result. Generally it is crew comforts that suffer and this was especially the case on a U-boat. The crew was crammed in like sardines.

Submarines are designed for specific types of missions. The Type IX was designed for long range patrols and therefore needed more space for fuel, supplies and of course torpedoes and it was simply made larger than the more numerous Type VII boats to accommodate these additional requirements.

The Type VIIC for example displaced 769 tons, had a pressure hull that was 50.50 meters in length and as a result could carry 14 torpedoes. The Type IXC displaced 1120 tons, had a pressure hull that was 58.75 meters in length and as a result could carry 22 torpedoes.
