As a 10 year old I visited the U-1023 in Morpeth dock Birkenhead with my mother and brother, we went on board down a hatch and then I believe what we saw was the officers quarters or sleeping areas and up and out via another hatch. The reason we were there was my father was Royal Navy but had died in hospital on the isle of Java when the japanese took the island.
