A little more to add from me to this story..After being earlier attack
unsuccessfully by a Catalina flying boat, U-468 was the object of a
search by a Liberator aircraft of 2OO Sqn (F/O Trigg). The U-boat
was spotted by the aircraft on the 11/7/43, on the surface 240 miles
SW of Dakar. Having decided to remain on the surface, U-468 put up
heavy & accurate A/A gun fire as the Liberator came into attack.
The aircraft was set on fire but Trigg held his course and dropped
his D/C on the U-boat, before crashing his aircraft into the sea.
There were no survivors from the aircraft's crew.
U-468 was damaged and sank 20 minutes later and her commander
and six men were able to climb into a rubber dinghy, which came from
the Liberator a/c when it broke up during the crash in the sea. When
Trigg did not return to base, a search began and on the 12/7/43 the
dinghy was sighted by a Sunderland aircraft. The survivors were picked
up by a British warship the next morning.
On the evidence given by U-468' s survivors, Trigg was awarded the
VC later in the year. In the action 46 men of U-468's crew were lost.
