Hi just read your post on the sinking of U1206..My uncle was a crewman onboard at the time of its sinking ..his name was Mannfred Alto Baumbach and he held the station of Matrosangrefrieter or seaman second class..Many years after the war he met with Capt Schlitt and in Freds own words ..He claimed that the ship was sunk deliberatly by him..this was to save his crew as the attrition rate was well over 80% for U-Boat crews and by then they knew the war was as good as over..My uncle was moved to a prisoner of war camp in Ledbury which was on the same site as my old school..some say not much had changed..lol.Fred sadly passed of cancer over 12 yrs ago and my Aunt still has his shorts he woare at trainning camp and his plimpsolls as well as his life preserver.I am moving to Scotland soon to live and strangly i will be only 20 miles or so from where the boat lies..My birthday is also the same as Capt Schlitt..16th of April..which is quite spooky..hope this is of interest.Andy Smith.
