<HTML>As far as I know, having a pet on board was a common fact in most of the navies. It was sometimes an uncommon animal like a monkey or a parrot but dogs and cats were the most represented among those extra guests. I think that the origin comes from the earlier submarines which encountered problems with poisoned air by carbonic gas. As this gas is invisible and does not smell any particular odour, it was dificult to detect but being heavier than air, an animal was sick before crew and it was a warning of the danger.
