In September 24, 1942, at 21.00, our portuguese ship " Nyassa", going from Casablanca to Veracruz, with republican spanish refugees, was stopped by a german submarine. The position of our ship was 28.55 N; 19.22 W. The submarine let us go undamaged and we have never known the reasons for not being sunk, taken to the Canary Island o made us return to Casablanca.
I have tried to identify this submarine but I am unable to do it . Looking at the positions of the U-boats in that zone I think I could have been U-214 with captain Günther Reeder .
The story that Paddy Gibbons explains tell us that the german captain was a humanitarian man and maybe this has a relation to our escaping unharmed from that encounter.
I would appreciate very much any suggestions about a way to identify that submarine that intercepted us in September 1942.
