<HTML>The unknown wreck discovered on 16 July by the famous wreck diver Innes McCartney during his \"operation Deadlight Expedition\" most probably is U 743 which was until now recorded as lost to unknown cause. Since I have reassessed its loss in early 1994 (see my book on U-boat losses) I have been unable to solve the matter of U 743. However, the description given by Innes McCartney perfectly fits the appearence of U 743 which was an early schnorkel boat without the \"Bali\" round dipole installation and dinghi containers on the upperdeck forward. Likewise it was probably still fitted with the ground plate for the deck gun which it carried at the time of commissioning. None of the other two boats (U 296, U 482) presently recorded as lost to unknown cause off the North Channel carried the above mentioned features. U 743 should have arrived off the North Channel around 13 September 1944, moving gradually towards Malin Head where U 482 in the days before achieved a fair number of successes in comparison to the other boats boats which all drew a blank. So it is more likely that U 743 was lost in the latter half of September or early October 1944. After that timespan the boat would have started its return to Norway. Therefore it should be checked if any information can be found among the records listing the \"U-boat incidents\" in the North Channel area to specify the exact date of its loss. From the description given by Innes McCartney a collision with an yet unknown vessel looks as the most likely cause for the loss of U 743.
Innes McCartney is to be congratulated for his recent discovery in the field of U-boat wrecks. His efforts in the past have already added much to the knowledge about the final fates of individual U-boats. I certainly would like to see more of this in future.
Best wishes
