U-953 vs SS Ganilly

<HTML>Hello,

recently and by pure chance I met an U-953 veteran (Gefechtsrudergänger) and had a very interesting discussion about his prewar, Kriegsmarine and POW experiences.
He has described vividly the sole succes of the boat, when U-953 (Kptl. Marbach) sank the SS Ganilly on 07.07.44 (?) in the Channel. Allowed to take a look through the periscope he saw the ship desintegrate and sink quickly thinking that hardly someone was able to survive the blow.

Now I\'m curious about the other side of the story from the allies side. Are there any written accounts covering in detail this particular sinking? And, which books dealing with the naval warfare in the Channel after the invasion are the most recommendable ones?

Many thanks in advance,
Frank
