<HTML>Hi to all, read this:
\"...On the morning of the 7/5-42 U-352 was sighted on the surface by an aircraft. The Boat dived and was undamage by the bombs dropped. In the afternoon of 9th U-352 was S of Cape Lookout when she sighted a ship, at which Rathke rapidly fired two torpedos. They both missed, one exploding prematurely some 200 yards from the vessel, which proved to be the US Coast Guard cutter \"Icarus\".
U-352 was quickly taken to the bottom in shallow water after Rathke realised exactly what he had attacked. \"Icarus\" fired five depth-charges, which blew off U-352\'s deck gun, werecked the conning tower, severely damaged the boat internally and killed the 1WO. The boat began to move slowly forward on one electric motor still working.
\"Icarus\" (Lt-Cdr M Jester) made two further deph-charge attacks, the second of which forced U-352 to resurface. Only then Rathke saw the damage to the tower and casing and the deck gun gone, did he order his men to abandon ship. As they came up they were cut down by fire from \"Icarus\".
The Engineer Officer, OL Trenz, went back below to make sure of scuttling arrangements. The sinking boat continued to be pounded by \"Icarus\" 3 inch gun and the men in the water were mercilessly machine-gunned, one of several incidents during the war of U Boat survivors being killed in the sea by US naval vessels.
\"Icarus\" began to leave the scene and, almost unbelievably, she radioing to find out whetever she should pick up survivors from U-352. After 5 messages to various commands permission was given to pick up the men and take them to Charlestown.
\"Icarus\" turned back and the survivors were pulled aboard, the wounded first! Rathke was the last man out of the sea and declined the helping hands offered to him. Of U-352 crew, 16 were shoot dead and 33 were made POW, of which at least one died soon afterwards.\"
Does anyone knows if Lt-Cdr M Jester was taken to marcial courts??????
