Thanks for the suggestion.

The original identification of Schulte on the cover of Hamburger Illustreite was done by Roland Berr at Ubootwaffe.net forum in November of 2006.

I have reached out to him directly to verify how he made the identification, and I'm awaiting a response. I also e-mailed Hubertus, the crew list expert to see if there is any mention of the reporter there.

I posted here in the hopes of broadening the search.

Neither the U-582's or BdU's KTB seem to make any reference to a reporter.

However, the person that made the initial inquiry, who has the original newspaper in his collection, just sent me an additional page that includes two photos that continue the cover story. The first shows rather substantial damage port-side aft of the conning tower (also mentioning a leak), and the second shows a 2m long hunk of twisted metal hung above the 88mm with several grinning enlisted crew around it stating they were bringing it home as a a trophy. The other remarkable thing about the second photo is that there is an American Flag draped across the front of the conning tower with the officers visible above. The last vessel they sank on this patrol was the Stella Lykes, which they had to board and set charges to finish off, thus giving them the opportunity to snag another trophy (not to mention the Master and Chief Engineer). The combination of the two may give further credence that this was U-582.

The photos in the paper were credited to Kreigsberichter, but no individual's name was provided.

The search goes on.
