<H2>Submarines on Rivers and Lakes</H2>

It is counted, and not without reason, that the submarines are especially seagoing ships. Cannot be argued with this. However, history knows curious examples of the use of submarines on the rivers and lakes. I gave here only some samples. <BR>

<BR>\\\"Along the river sail a submarine.
<BR>In this boat are three matrose.

<H3>Thames River</H3>

It is reliably known that in 1624 was designed, built submarine tests on Thames invented by Dutch physicist Cornelius Drebbel which was banished from its homeland. He was a teacher of the children English King Iakov I. Is known that Drebbel devised the system of air regeneration inside the ship.

<H3>Silver Lake in Gatchina</H3>

The second submarine of Dzhevetsky was built in St.-Petersburg at the Neva plant in 1879. Tested boat during the sinking at depth 7,5 m. sheathing was made from sheets by the thickness of 5 mm. This submarine had crew 4 men, and she had two screw propellersThe tests of this submarine were carried out in the Silver lake in Gatchine, which have a water of special high transparency. During these tests, which had as a goal to show the merits of boat Alexander III, Dzhevetskiy knew how to pass under the Tsarist boat, which followed the evolutions of submarines, and presented Empress Mary Fedorovne (AKA Danish Princes Dagmar) the bouquet of splendid orchids with the words: \\\"This is the tribute of Neptune to your Majesty\\\". After these tests followed the order for the production of 50 submarines, intended for the defense of seaside fortresses.

<H3>Danube River</H3>

<BR><B>German 30 Flottila</B>
<BR>Six German U-boats (U 9, U 18, U 19, U 20, U 23, U 24) were disassembled and on barges down the Elbe River to Dresden. On special trucks thay brought overland to Ingolstadt at the Danube River. The boats on barges went down the Danube River to Galatz. In Galatz the U-boats were assembled. Then thay went to Constanza by own power. <BR>

<BR><B>On way to Caspi</B>
<BR>The spaghetti-eaters mandolin-players skippers (© walter M) navigate Danube too.Just to know, it is to be noticed that, in the course of the period of co-belligerence (1940-1943), it was the only time in which the Germany made at Italy a specific request for military support, just in consideration \\\"<em>of the superiority of light torpedo crafts, either submarines or surface ones, of the Regia Marina regarding those which we had</em>\\\" [ Reader, ndr ]. Italian Admiral Riccardi gave immediate dispositions to send four Mas (of 24 tons of displacement), six CB 35 tons submarines, five torpedo motorboats and five explosive punts. These three squadrons were grouped in 101th Flotilla and prepared for the sending in Black Sea in the Moccagatta Convoy. The Italian assault fleet was put under the command of capitano di fregata Francesco Mimbelli.<BR>

The long column of vehicles left the base of La Spezia the April 25, 1942 and, after having passed with success innumerable obstacles and difficulties the column reached Wien, where the boats were put in Danube waters. From here they reached the Rumanian port Constanza May 2, 1942.

<BR><B>First submarine on Danube was Russian.</B>
<BR>The submarines of the small tonnage #3. She was laid in April-May of 1912 at the Neva plant in S.-Petersburg. It is gone down for the water on September 11, 1914, acceptance tests they were carried out in the Ladoga Lake, On the petition of the Expedition of Special Purpose, which was being occupied by the transportation of loads on Danube for the Serbian Army, in 1916 submarine \\\"#3\\\" was transfered to Danube for the rendering of moral effect on the Austro-Hungarian military flotilla. During June 1917 she was transferred to the Russian Danube Flotilla. After Russian revolution in the spring of 1918 she in defective state arrived to Rumanian, and then to the Hungarian Flotilla. <BR>

<BR>Ervin Sieche from Viene in private communication report me, that he
has a photo of this submarine in Budapest (1924).<BR>

<BR><B>This submarine was not unique for Hungaria.</B>

<BR>Gula Forintosh from Hungaria last six years constructed submarines at his own court. The first attempts was unsuccessful. In May 2001 Gula finished third model, which was named Polaris. The last submarine of Gula Forintosh has a length of approximately 20 meters and weigh 22 tons and she will have a crew of 3-5 men.<BR>

<H3>Amazon River</H3>

During the Peruvian-Colombian conflict 1933 were determined two zones of patrols for peruvian submarines: the one in the Pacific and other in the Amazon river. Two submarines and cruises \\\"Admiral Grau\\\" and \\\"Bolognesi\\\" crossed the Panama Canal. Thay had the order to penetrate the Amazon and to destroy Colombian flotilla that bombed and besieged Peruvian positions in the Napo river...

<H3>Ladoga Lake</H3>

In 1930 the Finns launched the \\\"Saukko\\\" which was a very small coastal submarine. The original use for this boat was as a minelayer in Lake Ladoga for which it could be dismantled in two, but in the event it was never used there.

In 1970th in Karelian town Lakhdenpokhya, located on the shore of Ladoga lake one can see two submarine. That was small diesel submarines. There was training naval base.

<H3>Submarine base of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet</H3>

After the beginning of WW2 not far from the port Poti in the mouth of Khobi river was located one of main submarine bases of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet

<H3>Amur River</H3>

During Russo-Japanese war 1904-05 Russian submarine patrolled the mouth of Amur river for averting the debarkation of Japanese landing.

At the begining of 1990th Russian Far-Eastern mass-media reported about the inhabitants of one local village, which left with the posters to the coast of the adjacent lake in order to express protest against the presence there of nuclear powered submarine. :)

<H3>Moscow River</H3>

In the region of the Northern rivers port in Moscow. Winter 1981. This submarine arrived to Moscow under her own power along the rivers waterpath. Distance to the nearest sea is more than 600 kilometers.
In winter Russian rivers are covered with the thick layer of ice and navigation is impossible.

Baltic fleet ready to transmit to Moscow diesel submarine, brought out from active service for her installation in Moscow as the museum. Several boats, one of which can take away free of charge, are located in Kronstadt. <BR>
