Hi everybody ... I'm a newbie here!
My research into F/Lt Desmond Victor Varian, a 500 Squadron RAF Hudson pilot, whose aircraft disappeared over the Med on the same day (12th December 1942) as another Hudson from the same squadron piloted by P/O John Pugh.
John Pugh's aircraft was shot down by U-73 (an event that can be read on this site), and the serial number is given as AM689 or AM698 in many accounts of this event.
I am a member of several forums dealing with the RAF in WW2, and a George Wilkins (the grandson of one of John Pugh's crew) posted the following on a topic (500 Squadron Hudson(s) AM689 or AM698 or ?) that I started here:
[forum.planetalk.net]
...which deals with the confusion over the serial numbers of the two 500 Squadron Hudsons lost on 27th December 1942.
I quote:
Post subject: F/Sgt Wilkins
"I am tracking back my grandfathers RAF history in the second world war and came across this thread. I have his Log Book and recorded in this it was not Hudson 698 but Hudson 638 M that they ditched on that day. Quote " 27.12.42 ... 06.04 hrs ... Aircraft 638 M ... Pilot P/O Pugh ... Attacked Submarine (Italian). Sub was fully surfaced. dc's straddled sub. Shot down by same. Aircraft Ditched. 7 1/2 hours in dinghy. Rescued by Walrus after being sighted by u/500. f/lt Barwood."
There has obviously been a misreading of a record at some point in the past, and with this now appearing, it is time the record was corrected. P/O John Pugh flew Hudson 'M' AM638 ... AND NOT AM698 ... when it was shot down by U-73 on 27th December 1942!
Regards
