Everyday another piece of the puzzle falls into place, and sometimes it's sitting right under our nose!

Thanks for the FH426 photo ref. This is a layman speaking, but I think fixing the larger 14-cylinder twin-row R-1830 engine to an engine mount that held a single-row 9-cylinder R-1820 engine would have added an awful lot of extra weight to the exsisting engine mount to be satisfactory. The difference in size and weight of a 14-cylinder engine block to the 9-cylinder block would have been quite considerable, especially on aircraft where weight was a major consideration. It is my guess that a major change would have had to be made to the engine mounting on the wing, and thus, not something done in the field. We would need to find an expert opinion on this, however!
