<HTML>From what Hans Goebeler told me, Nollau was a tough, brave, competent officer. I suspect he had a terminal disease and decided to check out before he lost his dignity, mind, body functions, etc.
As far as Zschech\'s suicide, I think his homosexuality may have had something to do with it. (pardon my lack of political correctness). When his academy classmates (the olympic ring clique) were lost, he may have lost more than just mere comrades. Also, his buddy 1WO Thilo Bode was transferred off the boat, replaced by the popular Meyer (who, like most of the crew, despised Zschech). That probably left him alone with his tortured thoughts (lonliness, fears of incompetence, guilt, etc.).</HTML>
