<HTML>The Suicide of Kptlt Horst Holtring.
When U-604 was attacked on three separate occasions on July 30/31 1943 she was so seriously damaged that Holtring rendezvoused with U-172 and U-185 on the 11th of August, where his crew was split between the two boats, with Holtring going to the latter, following which U-604 was scuttled.
On August 24th, however U-185 was attacked by two US Navy aircraft and was very badly damaged. When Water reached the batterys, chlorine gas spread through the boat and Holtring rushed to assist two of his crew in the fore-ends who had been wounded in U-604 and were unable to move.
It proved impossible to carry them out and in response to their pleas he shot them both, following which he turned his pistol on himself.
Attempted suicide of Wolfgang Wenzel.
When U-231 was sunk by depth charges from a British aircraft on january 13th 1944. Seven men were killed and the CO, Kptlt Wolfgang Wenzel, gave the order to abandon ship. He then took his pistol, placed the muzzle in his mouth and pulled the trigger but although the gun went off, the bullet lodged in the back of his neck without killing him and he was one of the 43 saved.
