<HTML>Hi Joe Diver,

U-85 is not a war grave. The crew was not in the boat when they were killed. There is not a single body inside. She is a very frequently dived wreck.

Warships do remain the property of their governments forever though, however the current German government has expressed no interest in the U-85. Most dive operators prohibit the taking of artifacts from her just so they will continue to have a wreck to take divers to.

A large number of artifacts have been removed from her over the years. There is also a videotape for sale that was taken inside her. I believe it is “First Blood - The sinking of U-85” which you can find on this site by searching the movies section for “First Blood”. You can purchase it through the link there. I can’t remember for sure if it is the one taken inside though. If it is not, I’ll update this post in a couple of days with the name of the one taken inside.

Photos of U-85 artifacts appear in a number of books and are on display in a number of places. One of her hatches is on display at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse museum, Buxton, North Carolina. See [www.nc-wreckdiving.com] for a photo. Also see [www.eclipse.net] for photos of her Enigma rotors.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
