I served as a U S Navy Bomb Disposalman during WW2. My partner and I inerted the booby trapped cargo tanks that were removed from the 234 and two other subs. The recorded story about the surrender was corrupted in order to cover up a scandal having to do with the millions of dollars of booty stored in the tanks. The 234 surrendered in Newport News in February of i945, not in Portsmouth New Hampshire as recorded.I wrote a manuscript describing the true dates and events that took place.
