Hello !
A message to tell U-Boat passionnated visitors in France that a new Museum is open in La Rochelle since 1 month, in the former officier bunker of the 3. U-Flottille. Constructed in secret in the town centre in 1941, it was the bunker of the hotel renamed "Haus Schepke" (Adress : 8, rue des Dames, 17000 La Rochelle).
It presents the whole history of La Rochelle during WWII, including the U-Boats. The complete bunker (300 m²) has been completly preserved during 70 years. It has been decorated with naval murals paintings made by two German artists, women from Hambourg.
The bar is specially interesting. Inside many U-Boats officers, including Oberleutnant Hans Stemmler LI from U-953 who, after two missions in the Channel, left from Brest to celebrate his 24th birthday ! On his shoulder the black cat "Peter"...Also presented the complete uniform of the Chief Machinist of the U-333 Gerhard Heber...
