Dear Greg,

Herewith some info about U-826 which may be helpful to you:

In late April/early May U-826 was on patrol in the Atlantic to the west of the English Channel

On 4/5 May U-826 received the order (to all U-Boats at sea) to cease operations and return to Norway

On 8/9 May U-826 received the order (to all U-Boats at sea) to surrender. U-Boats were instructed to surface and report their position, course and speed, as well as to fly a black surrender flag. U-Boats in U-826’s general location were then to proceed on the surface to Loch Eriboll on the north coast of Scotland

At 1128 on 9 May, U-826 reported its position at 61.15N, 02.47W (between Scotland and Iceland)

At 0645 on 11 May, U-826 arrived at Loch Eriboll (for preliminary examination) – the 5th U-Boat to arrive there. The boarding party was provided by HMS Fitzroy, which escorted U-826 into the anchorage

At 1300 on 11 May, U-826 sailed for Loch Alsh in north-west Scotland, escorted by HMS Fitzroy and in company with U-293

At 2015 on 11 May, U-826 arrived at Loch Alsh (for final examination)

At 1500 on 13 May, in company with seven other U-Boats which had surrendered from sea, U-826 sailed for Lisahally in N. Ireland (for laying-up prior to final disposal)

On 14 May, U-826 and the seven other U-Boats arrived at Lisahally, where Admiral Sir Max Horton, the Royal Navy’s Commander-in-Chief Western Approaches, staged a formal multi-national surrender ceremony to celebrate the end of the war against the U-Boats

The majority of U-826’s crew were disembarked at Loch Alsh and sent to POW camps. Only a steaming party remained on board for the transit to Lisahally

The majority of all the remaining U-Boat crews were disembarked at Lisahally and sent to POW camps, although a few remained to assist with the maintenance of the laid-up U-Boats

Thus, if you can discover when your father-in-law became a POW, you might be able to work out when and where he left U-826

Hope this helps

Yours aye

Derek
