<HTML>Something similar happened within the RM in the old bygone times, when the skipper was considered God\'s left hand. He could legally perform surgical acts in situations where there was nothing lost to lose, like in a submarine on Oceanic patrol (but all Italian Ocean-going subs sailed with the MO while less than 45% of the German ones had one).
Actually the Merchant Marine Cadets on the final stages of their training are taught the basic facts of emergency care and sometimes they are also offered the chance to observe live surgery performed in an operating theatre. Usually they get pretty upset on the first time, then they get used to that orderly and at least are able to administer some surgery without harming their casual patient in the middle of an ocean. If in doubt, they call the C.I.R.M. (http://www.cirm.it/) as anybody else on the sea.
