Mark - Rainer,

This might be helpful (translation is mine)....

Reference: "I Sommergibili Negli Oceani" Vol. XII - Ed. by Ubaldini, 3rd Ed. 1976, Rome 2002 - Page 126

The afternoon of the 25th of the same month (December 1940), sighted a freighter (the distress signal, transmitted, appeared that the unit that was being attacked by Tazzoli, was the British freighter 'Everlight' ('EVERLEIGH') of 5222 GRT) very far away and immediately began the chase and shortly after opened fire with cannon, which the steamer immediately responded with a view of her stern, while we were shooting - hampered by a long distance and heavy seas, the action lasted a long time without results - until just before sunset a thick rain squall with hail did break the contact, although upon further searching, the ('EVERLEIGH') contact was not re-established.
