A Little WWII Mystery....

My father was in the British Navy during WWII. Some time during the war, his brother (also in the British armed forces - probably the Navy) gave him a trunk / suitcase, allegedly belonged to a crewman aboard a German U-Boat.

My father passed away some years ago, and the case is in the possession of my (step) mother.

Here's the artifact:

I wish I had more to go on. I was hoping to find out the name of the crewman and what boat he was on.

I did find a listing for a Commander Hermann Steiert, who was in charge of U-128 (?) for 42 days in early 1943, which was then sunk off the east coast of South America.

I'm thinking this must have been a 'capture'.....

I would greatly appreciate any and all information you can provide.

The handle was probably replaced at one time. My parents moved from Boston to California in 1948 or so.

Thank you!
