Thanks John, Reason for my interest is that from 1948 to 1959, a boarding school for British Services children was established within the buildings of the former U-boat unit 1.UAA at Ruhleben. I was a pupil there from 1952 to 1957. Former pupils (we're all getting on a bit now!) have a very active website and Dönitz is often discussed. School folklore has him residing within the school grounds but more recently opinion favours the Stadtheide camp close by.
Anyone interested can find the former 1.UAA on Google Earth at 54/8/49.47N ...10/26/55.35E. The buildings shown and jetty are as constructed for the Kriegsmarine in 1938 save for the row of four smaller ones to the South.
The long building near the jetty was our sailing club had the remains of an Escape Practice Tank and other reminders of former use were rifle racks in the entrances to the accommodation blocks. Stadtheide Kaserne is shown 1/2 mile to the East, the huts now demolished and homes now built there.
