The hull design of the type XXI is similar to the Walther boat TypeXVIII.
Walther had been designing new, streamlined submarines with excellent underwater performance and which incorporated his revoluntionary air-indepenent propulsion system. This led to the proposed hydrogen-peroxide-powered Type XVIII, which displaced 1,652 tons and had an underwater speed of 24 knots.
In May 1943, however, it was suggested that this Type XVIII could be adapted to take a conventional diesel-electro propulsion system, not least because the designers realized that the large hull would enable many changes to conventional practice to be made.
Walthers Type XVIII design had been selected beacuse much time was saved, since the tank test and hydrodynamic calculations had already been completed.
Type XXI
Propulsion.
Diesel engines: Two MAN M6V 40/46; 2,200hp
Electric motors: Two SSW 2 GU 365/30; 2,500hp
Creep motors: two SSW GW 323/28; 323hp
Battert: Three 124-cell batteries.
Displacement
Surfaced: 1,621 tons
Submerged: 1,819 tons.
Type XVIII
This used a Walther design for an attack boat using the Walther prpulsion system, with a 1,887 ton submerged displacement, its overall design and appearance were used for the Type XXI and the Type XVIII which was cancelled.
Two hulls (U-796, U-797) were laid down in 1943 but construction was cancelled in March 1944.
I have several pictures of the Walther double-flow turbine engine which was built for the Type XVIII boat if you need them I will scan them and send them to you let me know!
You should be able to get a good copy of the charts by visiting Aces of the Deep web site wher you can down load the charts for all operational areas.
