Did Doenitz use his older skippers for the IXD boa

Did Doenitz use his older skippers to command the IXD2 boats? In such cases as Ernst Sobe who was one of his old hands. It seemed kind of bad to send these older experinced guys in the big slow diving boats.Can anyone help answer this one?
