According to my research, published in 1980 the book "La partecipazione tedesca alla guerra aeronavale nel Mediterraneo 1940 - 1945" [The German contribution to the Naval Air War in the Mediterranean (1940-1945)], the torpedoing of the cruiser British NEWFOUNDLAND happened to come follows:

"At 13:37 of 23 July 1943, the German submarine U-407 (lieutenant Ernst-Ulrich Brüller) hits NEWFOUNDLAND the front of Augusta, Un what success, erroneously, the Italian Navy has assigned to their submarine ASCIANGHI (Lieutenant Mario Fiorini) .
The NEWFOUNDLAND, en route from Augusta to Malta of the cruiser MAURITIUS and destroyer LAFOREY, LOOKOUT and LOYAL, he was hit in lat. 37°05'5"N, long. 15°24'2"E, by a torpedo launched by U 407, and with the rudder damaged, return to Malta at the speed of 22 knots. Two hours later the attack ASCIANGHI 3 destroyers what were performing northward research U-Boote. They saw the contrails cause torpedoes launched in direction LAFOREY and ECLYPSE, what counterattacked with bombs depth forcing the Italian submarine come to the surface in a scuttled under the fire of the guns."
