<HTML>Hi Ian,
According to Högler\'s reference book, at least half a dozen U boats carried a skull insigna. The closest to the KG 54 insigna is U 381\'s. (The origin of this Totenkopf insigna was a family link between U-381\'s commander KL Graf von Pückler und Limpburg and the Generalfeldmarschall von Mackensen of the Totenkopfhusaren fame. This boat was sunk after 09.05.1943.
Another possible contender is U 244 (KL Ruprecht Fischer) whose design is a close match.
Source for U 381: Högel, G. (1996), Embleme, Wappen und Mallings deutscher U Boote 1939 - 1945, Koehler, 98.
