Thanks Lorenzo for extensive info, I take your point that the attack by 59 Squadron was on U383. As shown in the numerous photographs of U106 under attack before being sunk by the Sunderland aircraft, she is clearly able to move freely and at speed. I take it that in the relevant RAF records of 59 Squadron the aircrew did not take any photo's or mentioned the type of U-boat that they were attacking '/e 500 or 750 tonner, which would resolve this issue. As you are aware there was a marked difference in size and shape between a type VIIC and a IX boat, I would have thought that all aircrews would have been instructed on the different types of U-boats at sea.
