Hi Lorenzo
Several sources credit C/333 with sinking U-240, including "U-boat versus Aircraft" by Franks/Zimmerman, but there is no evidence to support this. The U-boat was en route from Bergen to Narvik together with U-668, U-742 and U-965. The group was ordered to carry out a sweep off western Norway en route, in an area where V/330 carried out its attack on 16 May 1944 and was initially credited with sinking U-240 until it was discovered that U-668 had been the target. I concur with Axel Niestlé that there is currently no known explanation for the loss of U-240.
The attack of C/333 was carried out too far to the southwest of the area where U-240 was supposed to be, but U-241 and U-857 were there and as the latter did not mention an attack in its war diary the attack must have been directed against U-241, which did not report it as it was sunk by another air attack a few hours later.
We used the time 17/2221 as mentioned by Franks/Zimmerman for the attack description of C/333, but I corrected this now to 18/0007.
Best regards
Rainer
