Operation Magpie, Type XIC/40 U-1229 delivered Abwher trained spies Erich Gimpel and William Copepaugh to nighttime beach landing at Hancock Point in Frenchman Bay, Maine on November 29 1944. They were picked up by the FBI in New York in December '44, tried and convicted of espionage in February '45, sentenced to death, their sentence later commuted by President Truman, to life in prison. Gimpel was released after 10 years, deported to Germany and later moved to Brazil. Colepaugh, and American national, served much longer, later moved to King of Prussia, PA. I believe both men only recently passed away within the last 10 years or so.
