Dave,

The Panama hats made their initial appearance on 5 May 1941 at the departure of U 69 from Lorient for it's 3rd patrol to the South Atlantic. They were also worn when returning to port, as the photo indicates.

There is no other reference to the source of the "Panama Hats" in preceeding or succeeding chapters of the book. Possibly they were purchased in Lorient between March and May 1941....
