Yes, there was an episode with U-Boats with enforced anti-aircraft weapons (so called U-Flaks), which were used for escorting ongoing U-Boats against Allied planes. For mine-sweepers, you can look for the keyword "R-Boat"("Räumboote" ) and "Sperrbrecher".
Some U-Boats not equipped with Snorkel were also used for covering the incoming U-Boats against destroyers (groups Räuber, Pirat, Flibustier, Marder), which were directed by shore radar stations.
The distance covered by escorts you can find on the uboatarchive.net: go to the KTB list ( [www.uboatarchive.net] ), find U-Boats ongoing from French bases, and look for entry "releasing the escort" (or similar). There should be given a position, where the escort was released (this page will be helpful for converting the German naval grid coordinates: [grid.nylle.de]. At least there should be time, so from this you can estimate distance.
