Any ideas for a possible candidate?

According to British sources, on or about 16 June 1942 a U-boat rescued the crew of a Ju88 bomber and that of a Do24. Presumably the latter was an air-sea rescue aircraft that had found the former, but then run in to trouble itself. The two crews - totalling ten men - were rescued by an unidentified U-boat. According to the same source, the U-boat had sunk a cruiser using three torpedoes on or about the same period. I have checked the BdU KTB online but cannot find a match to the information that is good enough to tie down an identity for the U-boat.

To further muddy the water; the same report lists that a second U-boat rescued a pilot from an unidentified unit (but circumstantial evidence suggests a fighter unit) at the same time. According to Luftwaffe losses, the Ju88 was listed as missing (the British source is quite specific to codes) while I cannot find a reference to the Do24 and the assumed identity of the fighter-pilot is also confirmed as a loss. Both the Ju88 and Bf109 were lost on 14 June 1942. I have nothing else to go on except that both Luftwaffe units were employed in the Med.

Any help identifying what boats were involved in either or both of these incidents would be much appreciated.

TIA

Adam
