Hi Adam

The info about the cruiser sunk in June 1942 certainly refers to the sinking of HMS HERMIONE by U-205, but it were two other U-boats that rescued a total of 16 German airmen during the night of 15/16 June 1942.

U-83 discovered a disabled Do24 north of Tobruk, went alongside to take off the crew and then scuttled the flying boat with gunfire. Rescued were Ofw Sost, Ofw Jänsen, Uffz Förster, ObGfr Münch, ObGfr Möller, ObGfr Schulz and the fighter pilot Lt Hesse (reportedly from 7./JG 53).

U-431 located rubber dinghies with nine occupants south of Crete, that proved to be the crew of a Do24 and a Ju88. Uffz Fuhrmann, Uffz Westerkowsky, Uffz Forster, ObGfr Jedermann, ObGfr Ritzrau and ObGfr Wallraff came from the flying boat, while Uffz Springmeier, Uffz Kurtz and Gfr Scheer from the Ju88, whose pilot Lt Müller had earlier drifted away in a life vest and could not be found despite a lengthy search.

Can you help me identifying the involved aircraft (exact type, unit, full name of crew members, circumstances of their loss)?

Best regards
Rainer
