I am looking for the identity of a U-boat which was to meet the Italian submarines ARCHIMEDE and BAGNOLINI off the Gironde estuary on 15.09.1942. The three were to make the Bay of Biscay crossing together to their respective patrol areas. The U-boat providing a measure of security because of its Metox. During the evening of 15 September 1942, the Italians were informed that the U-boat had turned back because of defects and so they made the crossing without its assistance.
I have been unable to ascertain the identity of this U-boat. I have checked the possibility it was U-454 as she sailed from St. Nazaire on 15 September and then had indeed turned back because of defects but her KTB makes no mention at all of such a mission.
Any clue?
Many thanks,
