U-boat Attacked Off Florida East Coast Summer 1942?

I have some unpublished reminisces written by an Army wife stationed in Florida during World War II. She worked a weekly morning shift as a coast spotter on Jupiter Island looking for aircraft and submarines. On her first watch shift in the summer of 1942 (exact date not given) she arrived not long after dawn and, before the previous watch left, she spotted a U-boat (identified because of the shape of conning tower). She telephoned Miami to report the sighting. Several Army planes (presumably from Morrison Field, about 25 mi away) and Coast Guard ships soon arrived and commenced a depth charge attack on the suspected location of the sub, which had submerged before they arrived. The attack continued south along the coast. An oil slick washed up on the beach that afternoon. Residents who lived further south on the island told the spotter than they had seen the attack and saw debris fly from the water from some of the explosions.

Yet as noted elsewhere on these forums "Recent studies of all available data on the fate of all 1,154 U-boats commissioned into the Kriegsmarine indicate that no U-boats went missing off the East Coast from March 1942 to August 1943."

So assuming the woman is telling the truth about what she saw (or thinks she saw) what actually happened? Did a U-boat escape or what? Where might I find some official report about the attack - war diaries for the 7th Naval District?
