Hi James

Welcome to the uboat.net forum :)

The source for this information is the KTB of the BdU and that of the U-boat itself.

It is difficult to bring such events in relation with certainty if the escorts of a convoy were unaware of the presence of a U-boat, so no details about torpedo or depth charge attacks are available for comparison of the German and Allied accounts.

Other researchers linked the events reported by U-53 between 17 and 19 November to another northbound convoy, the French 27-KS, bound from Oran/Casablanca to Brest/St. Nazaire. From my own research I concluded that U-53 encountered 27-KS west of Gibraltar on 15 November, soon lost contact after diving due to an aircraft and then headed north in an attempt to find this convoy again, but spotted the convoy HG-7 instead two days later.

Best regards
Rainer
