Sinking of American ship, Coamo by U-604

My uncle who I never knew, Lawrence Anthony Glowczewski was killed on December 2, 1942 when the U-604 sank the ship, the Coamo in the North Atlantic. The Coamo was part of a convoy MKF-3 on that date, but was ordered for some unknown reason by the British Admiralty to leave the convoy and proceed alone.
I have two questions:
Why was the British Admiralty making this decision? More importantly, why would the Admiralty do such a thing?
Everyone was lost even though it was reported that some men made it to life rafts but likely perished in the gale that lasted for 3 days beginning December 3, 1942.
Any help would be appreciated!
