The war diary does not confirm that U 99 picked up a survivor. It is only mentioned that the freighter sank within 40 seconds and that it was learned later that it carried iron ore.
It is not completely impossible that this was learned from a survivor and was not mentioned in the war diary because so much happened that night.
It is only a guess from me that it would have been mentioned anyway if U 99 picked up a crew member.
Also it is not mentioned that the german u-boat came across a life boat from another ship.
