Why were deck guns kept for so long in the war?

<HTML>Haven\'t posted in a while for I haven\'t had a question to post! I was just wondering why the main deck gun remained on the u-boats for so long into the war, even though it was rarely used later on in the war due to increased aircraft patrols, ect.
