<HTML>\">Even if the Germans had positive proof that Enigma was compromised, they had no spare coding system to take its place.<\" Not so. The Enigma security fiasco is a rather long story which has been discussed here already, so I will just limit this to the rotors. The Enigma was a perfectly workable ciphering system and essentially unbreakable IF the ROTORS are changed frequently. Only 8 rotors were used through the course of the war and they were all stolen by the British. The Germans should have been using hundreds of rotors. Breaking a rotor wiring pattern by analysis was a time consuming job, so all the Germans had to do was keep introducing new rotors and Bletchly would have been chasing its tail for the course of the war. This is not to say that some design changes could also have increased security, especially to analysis, but the basic idea was sound.
The rotor issue could have been solved in a matter of weeks. Design changes could have been done in a year.
