<HTML>US subs operated offensive patrols in the Atlantic during 1942 and 1943. They were based in Panama, the East coast, and for a brief time, England. It amounted to several dozen patrols.
The purpose was to hunt blockade runners and U-boats. They were spectacularly unsuccessful at both. No U-boat or German ship was confirmed to have been sunk by a US sub in the Atlantic. (A handful of U-boats and at least one German ship, the Michel, were sunk by US subs in the Pacific. No US subs were sunk by U-boats during the war).
After 1943 the offensive operations were ended as inneffective, dangerous, and counterproductive ot other ASW efforts. The presence of US subs also inteferred with ASW efforts, as the identity of the sub had to be confirmed. One US sub was sunk by US ASW forces near Panama by mistake late in the war.
The Atlantic near the East Coast was still used for shakedown cruises, training, and transition from factories to the Pacific operating theater.
By the later war years the only US subs operating in the Atlantic were either school boats or boats fresh from the factory and green as could be. They were ordered to avoid U-boats if encountered, as it was felt they stood little chance against the seasoned U-boat veterans.
