Realism in film \"Das Boot\"

<HTML>Started re-watching my tape of \"Das Boot\" (Director\'s Cut) again last night. Got up to about half way through the movie. I found that the attention to detail was pretty impressive in some cases, not-so-impressive in others.
Impressive:
I hadn\'t noticed before the scene where the guy is sitting at the Enigma machine typing away. I just saw a show on Enigma on tv a couple nights ago and this looked like a pretty realistic representation.
Noticed that the captain kept the periscope up for minimal amounts of time.
Also realistic was the way the boat\'s occupants were tossed around while the boat was running on the surface in heavy seas. But why was the crew so lax in securing stuff. There were numerous scenes where stuff went flying around the boat as it pitched and rolled in the seas. Was this realistic or was it added to the movie for effect?
One other thing not so impressive - everyone on the crew but the captain and No. 2 (?) seemed overly stressed at the slightest hint of danger (incl the first encounter with the destroyer). Surely these crews were not that nervy.
But ah, I must remember that this is an anti-war film...
