Of course that they had to actually sink the ship for it to count (although claiming unconfirmed ships was common practice as well, since confirmation was hard to get if you have to crash dive immediately after attacking in order to get away alive).

But the issue is not that. The issue under debate is whether a second torpedeo was technically needed in this case. Using the deck gun to kill a wounded ship was common practice before radar etc. made it way too dangerous, and some smaller ships were even sunk by means of the deck gun only. </HTML>
