Das Boot Attacking Airplane

I have been trying to figure out what the aircraft was that attacked the U-96 while it was trying to enter the Med. I closest looking aircraft I can think of is a P-47. It couldn\'t be a P-40 or a Spitfire. The wings are not \"bent\" like a Cosair and the plane was painted a type of olive-drab. I know that P-47 Thuderbolts had this paint style early in the war. The one problem is that the P-47 had 8 .50 Brownings and if I remember, the plane only had three flashes on hte gun ports, indicating that there were only 3 machine guns in each wing. </HTML>
