About 20 years ago I did extensive research into the WWI UBI and UBII classes, and I'm also a fan of Jack Finney's book and have seen the Sinatra movie several times. The movie boat is a mock-up with a Type VIC style conning tower but more the proportions of a Type II. The proportions just aren't quite right, but it's not too bad. The boat in the Finney book matches the description of a WWI type UBI, with the exception of the conning tower. Finney's U-19 (a fictional number) has a conning bridge more like a UBIII class, with a chest-high spray shield around 2/3rds of the tower. The U-19's interior configuration is almost exactly like the UBI class as described by Royal Naval Intelligence. Of course, a small coastal boat would not have made it to the Long Island coast. Fun story though!! -Tom
