This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

Good Afternoon All,
Got to get my 2 cents worth in on this one. Das Boot is, in my humble opinion, the best movie ever made about ANYTHING !!
I first taped it ( all six episodes) when the BBC showed it way back when it was first released. I don't know whether the expression 'Well Thumbed' applies to video tapes but it certainly describes mine. Coincidently I'm currently watching it again after about 9 months and it still leaves me spellbound. I could go on about it (What the Hell ! I WILL) The research that went into the making of Das Boot is mind boggling. The attention to detail is unparralled eg. When U96 attacks the convoy Der Alte announces " Anlauf Beginnt" this is a direct quote from Luth's lecture. He always did this to focus his crew's mind on the job in hand. The recreation of archive footage/photos ( Is it Topp's crew waving as they leave on their fateful patrol ?) I'm not dead sure on that one but I remember the photo. . Add to this, Jurgen Prochnow's performance as the eponymous Kaleu is one of the greatest in cinema history, . He WAS the commander of U96, NOT Lehmann-Willenbrock I don't care what anybody says to the contrary. He was interviewed on BBC after the series finished and I for one was relieved that he was was alive. Some of the cinematography is almost Caravagio like in composition. ( eg.Grouped around the control centre when they were sunk)
It is at once a thriller, an adventure, a psychological drama, a history lesson, a warning etc etc.
I for one will never tire of Das Boot.
